What the Hills Teach Me

by Lori Bohning

Sometimes I forget how many ways God speaks to us. I expect His voice to come in the big moments, but more often I have found His voice in the quieter places; in the hills, the waves, and in the breeze.

I have always found peace in the hills. Something about the space, stillness, and perhaps it’s the way they remind us to look up to lift our eyes beyond what we can see. I was blessed to visit the Swiss Alps in July. The hills of Switzerland absolutely took my breath away. Rolling green fields stretched like a blanket of peace. Wildflowers dotted the land with color—vibrant, small, and yet somehow full of purpose. The air was still. Sacred.

And in the quiet of those hills, I felt His presence.
His closeness.
His whisper.
His enough-ness.

He didn’t meet me in more noise, more schedules, more overthinking, more trying to hold things together, more fixing, more doing. He met me in stillness. In wide open spaces. In less. In simple.

I followed the whispers of my heart to Stowe, Vermont, several years ago, and recently to the Swiss Alps. I didn’t fully understand why—I just knew I had to go. And now, I believe it was God’s invitation.

He led me there. To quiet hills, green pastures, where, wildflowers bloom in places no one planted, and where mountains touch the sky.

He knew exactly what my soul needed. He knows what your soul needs. Just follow that still, small voice inside you, and trust Him.

And so I lift my eyes because I know where my help comes from.

From the One who speaks in stillness, fills what’s empty, and meets me in the hills.

Not a single flower is missed by His eye. And neither are YOU. He fills all the holes, all the voids, the longing, the ache, and He is more than enough. He quiets the storms within and brings peace to our restless hearts.

Ladies, He wants you to know that you are His beloved, you are held, you are still being written into a story that is not over yet.

So, take the next breath, and lift your eyes to the hills. Open your heart. He is speaking. Just listen.

where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

“I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places…”
