5 Benefits of Journal Writing

by Paula Henken

I use the old-fashioned method of paper and pencil, but just FYI there are apps in your phone that can be used as well. For me, I find writing to be a powerful and accessible means to gain insight, healing, growth and change. Journaling for me is definitely an emotional healing.

  1. Writing by hand can make learning easier. When we write, a unique neural circuit is automatically activated. A mental stimulation in your brain. Learning is now easier.
  2. Writing by hand can improve memory. Having been researched in a college study, those that hand write notes remembered more than those who took notes on a lap top.
  3. Maximum benefits are achieved through handwriting a journal. You develop a more personal, positive attachment to your journal and the journalling time tends to last longer.
  4. Writing by hand gives a benefit of almost a meditative sense and keeps you “in the present”.
  5. Journaling can help enhance creative expression by writing down your thoughts, blessings & negative thoughts to go back over later.

The only supplies you need are a really cute notepad, maybe one that fits into your purse, your favorite ink pen, maybe some white-out to keep it neat and possibly stickers to make it fun!

Journaling has many benefits and can help you in the following ways:

  • Achieve goals
  • Track progress and growth
  • Gain self-confidence
  • Improve writing and communication skills
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Find inspiration
